THIS GIVING TUESDAY - GIVE A FOSTER CHILD SOMEONE HE CAN COUNT ON

Today CASA Philadelphia is proud to take part in Giving Tuesday.

Since its founding in 2012, Giving Tuesday has inspired giving around the world, resulting in greater donations, volunteer hours, and activities that bring about real change in communities.

CASA Philadelphia has a unique opportunity today to engage with the caring citizens who make our work possible. We hope you will take part in this special day by supporting CASA’s work in service to abused and neglected children in foster care.

You can help us!

Visit our online friendraising campaign to make a secure, tax-deductible donation to CASA Philadelphia (an approved 501c3 charitable organization).
  1. SHARE OUR STORY. We know you appreciate CASA’s vital service to foster children. Please spread the word and help us raise awareness.

There are many ways to get involved in Giving Tuesday.  We encourage be part of this global event by supporting the dedicated CASA volunteers who make an incredible difference in the lives of Philadelphia’s abused and neglected children.

Demystifying the IEP: In-service Training for Volunteers

6:00pm - 8:00pm

Calling all CASA and EDM volunteers!  Come and join Dr. Lisa Dissinger and Ms. Amy Eisen on December 6, 2016, 6-8 pm in the Lucretia Mott conference room at the Friends Center (1st Floor, 1501 Cherry Street) for a discussion of how to advocate for your child’s educational needs based off of their individualized educational plan (IEP).  Dr. Dissinger and Ms. Eisen will focus on how to look at the basic components of an IEP and how they can inform "good" educational decisions and advocacy, whether you are an EDM or CASA volunteer. All attendees are encouraged to bring in questions and concerns about their individual child's IEPs.

Dr. Dissinger is a child psychologist and certified school psychologist who works in many private and public schools in the Philadelphia area. She also volunteers for CASA as an EDM volunteer and will be available this year to provide additional supervision to EDMs with children in residential placement.

Ms. Eisen has been serving students with special needs, their families and teachers for over 35 years. Her professional background includes pediatric occupational therapist, certified school psychologist and, most recently, school administrator. Ms. Eisen also is available to provide additional supervision to EDMs for children with special needs who attend area public schools.

Please RSVP to Program Director Cynthia Mason at cynthia.mason@casaphiladelphia.org.  You will receive 2 hours of in-service training credits for attending this training.

EDM Training: Apply today!

6:00pm - 9:00pm

This year, CASA was awarded a grant from Impact100 Philadelphia to develop our Educational Decision Maker (EDM) program.  An EDM volunteer is an individual who has been screened and trained by CASA Philadelphia and appointed by the court to serve as the legal “parent” for children in out-of-home care who do not have anyone to make educational decisions on their behalf.

We are looking for:

~Someone who forms a direct relationship with the child.

~Someone who will visit that child as needed to address educational concerns.

~Someone who will have contact with school personnel, caseworkers, and placement facility staff about the child’s educational needs.

~Someone who will attend school meetings and review appropriate school records.

A background in education is preferred, but not required.

This stand-alone training is designed for volunteers who would like to train to be EDM volunteers only.
